Memoirs of a filmmaker too stubborn to listen to reason
YEAR THREE
Another year, another scene in someone’s basement. Now we needed to create a breakroom. This actually required some minor set construction. Clearing out a small room in my parents’ house and creating a simple break room from the ground up involved a casual week of painting and gathering set pieces.
This scene was eventually eliminated from the final cut. But there was debate over this until finally consulting a professional editor and fresh pair of eyes. Though it was a family favorite among the cast members.
Further, there was difficulty securing rights to a particular Daffy Duck cartoon that I wanted the scientist to be watching while sipping espresso. Any by difficulty, I mean Warner Bros. wouldn't give it to us. Wouldn't even sell it to us. And I honestly couldn't imagine anything else in its place. Cartoon: Nasty Quacks 1945 dir. Frank Tashlin.
