Memoirs of a filmmaker too stubborn to listen to reason
YEAR FOUR
It wasn't until 2009 that "shit got real" so to speak. I had spent the late summer/early fall working on a local production called PICKLED directed by Monetrae. As director of photography I was spending five days a week shooting a movie, solving problems, creating shots, working with actors, ultimately bringing this ridiculous story to life. Absurd as it was, it was filmmaking, the thing I love more than anything.
The whole experience was a wake-up call for me. I made a decision then that would change the course of my life for the next seven years. It was time to start production on The Mad Scientist. And I would not stop until it was done.
In November I was able to more or less re-charge the ‘buzz’ of this project and wrangle in the help of a new camera operator and small crew to shoot on location at the NE Portland house I lived in. The scene was simple enough but as a filmmaker on a mission, the shots I laid out on the storyboards were not so simple. But we had a good team of young filmmakers on board that night and we were able to knock out the whole thing exactly as I storyboarded.
The only regret about the whole thing is that it’s shot on 720p and it just barely holds up next to the 1080p+ of the rest of the movie.
